Suikoden Follow-Up Blows Past Kickstarter Goal — Could Hit Nintendo’s Next-Generation Console?

A spiritual successor to Suikoden is coming…

We truly are living in a beautiful age of gaming. Just a handful of years ago, it seemed like turn-based JRPGs were a thing of the past. A relic of a bygone era. Given the advances in technology and gaming, more action-centric combat replaced a lot of the turn-based stuff. You need only look at recent Final Fantasy games to see how that trend affected JRPGs. But, with the release of the Nintendo Switch, there seemed to be a newfound love of the genre.

Kickstarter has helped many games get started, including indie turn-based ones from creative developers. It’s also been a way to help seasoned vets get passion projects off the ground. That is exactly the case with the new game Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which comes from key creatives behind classic Suikoden series.

The Suikoden spiritual successor launched on Kickstarter this morning with a $509,713 USD goal. Roughly two hours later, it blew past that goal. As of this writing, it is approaching $700,000. Needless to say, this further proves just how hungry fans are for some old-school JRPG classic goodness. And this game really does lean into the style and aesthetic of its predecessors.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes utilizes 2D character models and places them in 3D backgrounds. This helps give the game an old-school anime-esque aesthetic while giving it a more cinematic style and feel. It’s kinda the best of both worlds, in all honesty.

“Over the past years the core creators have met up at different events, and of course you talk about the glory days as well as regrets,” Murayama told The Verge. “One common thing that always came up was ‘Isn’t it about time we make a game for ourselves? Something we really want to make? Something we can make for the fans?’ And that dream provided the spark for this current project.”

While this thing does look beautiful, It’s hard not to wonder why it’s not in development for the Switch. As of right now, the Switch — which seems like a perfect candidate for the project — isn’t even in consideration. The reason? Apparently, it will require downgrades, which feels like a copout. Yes, the game is gorgeous, but it doesn’t seem like the kind of project that would really tap out the Switch.

Regardless, if they hit $1 million, the game will hit multiple platforms such as the “Nintendo’s next generation console.” This is honestly a bit disappointing since I don’t see that console coming out until roughly 2024 — two years after the game would hit PC. This feels more like a way for them to cover themselves with fans than any real sort of possibility.

That being said, it does look like an amazing game. While I haven’t played any of the Suikoden games, their legacy and love are well-known. I’d be more than happy to dip my toe into this feel and aesthetic when Eiyuden Chronicle hits PC and consoles.
