According to writer/director James Gunn, the Superman For All Seasons comic is a major influence on his Superman: Legacy movie. As we already know, Superman: Legacy will be the movie jump off point for a new DCU with an all new cast. So far all we know about the main cast is that our Superman will be played by David Corenswet and Lois by Rachel Brosnahan. Some secondary hero roles have been filled out as well. However, we still do not have a name for Lex Luthor or Jimmy Olsen.
With the actors and writers strike in force, we are also not going to find out anything else until that has ended. However, Gunn has dropped this little nugget on social media. Check it out.
Just received this stunningly gorgeous Absolute edition of Superman for All Seasons, one of my favorite Superman stories & a huge influence on Legacy (& a strangely perfect bookend with All-Star Superman). I guess if we want to look at where that influence comes from we have to go back to something Gunn said already. That Superman: Legacy will revolve around Kal-El reconciling his life as Superman with his upbringing as Clark Kent, the Kansas farmboy.
How For All Seasons works is that it has a separate story narrated by a different character for each season. We start in Spring with Clark leaving his family and making the decision to head to metropolis. Summer is the impact Superman’s appearance has on the City. Autumn and Winter deal with Luthor’s plan to get rid of Superman and his eventual return to Luthor’s annoyance.

Whilst I really don’t expect Superman: Legacy to take place over a year broken into four seasons. I think we can see elements Gunn may have been attracted to in the book. Clark being a little lost in the City and maybe even a little homesick is one aspect I could see making it’s way in. I could also see some influence on our new Lex Luthor. In the comics Luthor always starts with ‘for the greater good’ intentions. However, they usually all involve him being in sole charge of the City. In this comic, to begin with Luthor see’s Superman as an obstacle to his own goals. Luthor wants Metropolis to depend on him for protection, not Superman. He then devises a plan to show Superman he can’t handle the protection of Metropolis on his own.
There’s also a few ideas in that comic I would hate to see make their way into the movie. The whole ‘Toxin’ storyline is just a bit weird for me. Then again, much as I enjoyed Superman comics, they were never my favorites as a kid. What I may be looking for could be very different to what the hardcore Supe fans are looking for.
All Star Superman also seems to be a major influence on Gunn’s story, so he’s definitely taking the Marvel approach of the comics being the muse for a new idea. As opposed to trying to adapt the actual stories of the comics in a more direct way.
What do you think as according to James Gunn, the Superman For All Seasons comic is a major influence on his Superman: Legacy movie? Thoughts below as always.
