Superman: Legacy Production Designer Praises Leadership Of James Gunn

According to a recent report Superman: Legacy is to film in March 2024, and we also have a new brief synopsis.

Ahead of the movie’s production beginning, Superman: Legacy production designer Beth Mickle praises the leadership of James Gunn. We have no date for production to begin due to a few outstanding strikes you may have heard about. However, pre-production is underway and Mickle has nothing but praise for Gunn’s style of leadership.

Speaking with Screen Rant Mickle talks about how string Gunn’s vision is, how detailed his ideas are and also how much freedom he gives his artists to work within.

“That does mean I am doing the new Superman film, and it couldn’t be more of an honor. I’m very happy. We’re all very excited to be a part of the team. We’re very lucky that he comes with a crystal clear vision of what he wants his movies to be. And that’s not often the case.”

“A lot of times you’re really finding it, or a lot of times a production designer and the costume designer find it for the director. But he comes always with a brilliant first draft of the script, which is also very rare, and a really clear idea of how the movie’s going to be shot, what he wants it to feel like. He has strong references. Has fantastical musical references, and he’s really articulate about it. He really lays out this wonderful roadmap for my team and me and the other creative departments to follow.”

However, as Mickle then goes on to say, despite Gunn’s clarity of vision, he also allows for creative license.

“And it always starts with big, beautiful worlds. We get to roll up our sleeves and come up with concept art and references and share them with him. He gives great feedback, helps direct, but he also gives a lot of creative license, which is also rare, especially for somebody who has such vision. And so we actually all get to spread our wings and have a really great time while we’re doing it, and all really feel like we contribute to it at the end of the day.”

It would be fair to say Gunn is one of my favorite filmmakers out there. I’m really keen to see him tackle a very different type of movie in Superman: Legacy. I think Gunn will pull it off as despite his comedic leanings, which are great, his movies always have heart to them. I think Legacy could be Gunn proving the the world he can also make different types of movies. Legacy is certainly the DCU project I’m most looking forward to seeing.
