As per the embargo lifting yesterday, we have the current Superman RT score and a review roundup as it swings positive to start. Let’s just get right into, despite some pre-embargo leaks which were probably done for clicks, the reviews that are coming in are either fairly, to very positive. One of the most common words I see used by reviewers is that James Gunn’s Superman is ‘fun’. Some think the world is a little too busy, despite the fun, others love the worldbuilding of what is essentially a fantasy world.
Praise for Corenswet, Brosnahan and Hoult in the three leads roles are pretty much universal. However, as much as most say it’s fun, there’s also not that many critics calling it a great movie on it’s own. More like a fun start to a potentially exciting sandbox.
As of me writing this up, just 30 minutes before publishing, the RT score is currently sitting at 85%.
That means Superman is currently the third highest rated Superman centric live-action film on the RT site. These scores are still shifting, If I had written this earlier today or last night, it was as high as 90%. That does possibly indicate a downward trend. However, that is not how reviews normally work, they go up, down and then stabilise after a week or so. Of course, the real test comes later this week, when the audience gets to see it for themselves. Currently it has opened at 96% but that’s just for early screenings so far.
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace – (14%)
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (28%)
Superman III (29%)
Justice League (39%)
Man of Steel (57%)
JL Snyder Cut (71%)
Superman Returns (73%)
[Superman (85%)]
Superman: The Movie (86%)
Superman II (88%)

Fresh Score
“What’s best about Gunn’s movie is its laser-focused on relatable characters. This is no puzzle piece in a universe or a loud series of action set pieces.”
“Gunn’s screenplay can certainly be faulted for piling on too many elements… But what matters most is that the movie is fun, pacy and enjoyable, a breath of fresh air sweetened by a deep affection for the material.”
“Gunn constructs an intricate game of a superhero saga that’s arresting and touching, and occasionally exhausting, in equal measure. Audiences should flock to it.”
“It’s not a great movie, by any stretch, but it is a highly entertaining one with a solid cast, impressive effects and an underlying message of love and respect.”
Rotten Score
“Writer-director Gunn is brilliant at conjuring spectacle and creating alien realms… What Gunn is not so great at is storytelling. “Superman” is all over the place, not just geographically but also narratively.”
“Gunn approaches the nerdosphere’s most celebrated property like a giddy amnesiac who has missed the precipitous rise and fall of multi-character Marvel superhero movies and is instead stuck somewhere in the early 2010s.”
What do you think of Superman‘s RT score so far and the review roundup? Are you seeing Superman this week or not?
