Just yesterday, it was revealed that Creed 2 would likely start production on February 5, 2018. Of course, with that came the question of who will direct the darn picture. With production rapidly approaching, they’d certainly need someone to help out with preproduction sooner rather than later, right?

I threw out some long-shot hope that perhaps Ryan Coogler, director of the first Creed, would be up to direct right after his work on Black Panther, but even I have to admit it would be a tall order. As if hearing my own speculation and the desire for answers, Sylvester Stallone took to Instagram later that night to make a low-key reveal.

That’s right. Mr. Sly Stallone himself will be returning to the Rocky franchise in a directorial capacity. Of course, Stallone is no stranger to directing, and has directed most of the Rocky films to date, including Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, and Rocky Balboa. Additionally, we know he’s been spending the past few months writing the script for the movie.
As such, he’s not a bad choice to helm the project, though I hope that more kinetic energy that really made Creed isn’t lost in transition. The last Rocky movie proper was a fantastic film, but its overall aesthetic and style was more glossy and meditative, and we’d hate for it to revert back to something more in line with that than what we got in Creed.
