Seeking your own love and decisions is problematic for a young Indian woman in the 1930s. These Indian traditional cultural values often divide a woman’s sense of duty versus following her heart.
In Draupadi Unleashed, the film explores the coming of age story of a young woman living in a patriarchal society of the 1930s.
The film stars Salena Qureshi, Dominic Rains, Azita Ghanizada, Anna George, Taaha Shah, Saad Siddiqui, Pooja, Batra, Anil Kuma, Melanie Chandra, and Cas Anvar. Tony Stopperan and Nisha Sabharwal directed the film from a script adapted by Stopperan from Sabharwal’s novel.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Set in the 1930’s India, Draupadi Unleashed centers on a sixteen-year-old Indira who finds herself torn between true love, her duty to follow through with an arranged marriage, and the powerful allure of a mysterious guru. Through her heartbreaking journey to self-discovery, long-held secrets are brought to light and Indira discovers the strength within herself to break free.
In a story that mixes magical realism and gorgeous surroundings with the harsh realities of a patriarchal society, this beautifully told the tale of a young woman at a crossroads in her life offers a rare look at aristocratic Indian society in the early part of the 20th Century—one that will resonate with audiences today.
