Paramount+ certainly gained a foothold in the streaming service wars with its offerings of many different series in the Star Trek universe. In its anticipated latest offering, the new series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds offers something relatively close to the original Star Trek series.
As confirmed, Spock returns to the screen for this new series that features Captain Pike at the helm of the spaceship. In the younger version of Spock, he is a science officer learning his position in the Federation.
Ethan Peck plays the young Spock, who was famously portrayed by Leonard Nimoy for decades and passed away in 2015.
Obviously, it is not Peck’s first portrayal of the young Spock as he played the character on another Paramount+’s series in Star Trek: Discovery. Most definitely, he’ll have a much more expansive role in this new series.
During the Television Critics Association press conference this week attended by LRM Online, Peck addressed the most difficult part about playing Spock.
“There are a lot of challenges. The ears are burdensome in many ways. But I would say in our series it’s finding the balance between his human and emotional sides, human and Vulcan sides, between his deeper emotional sides, and his deeper logical sides,” said Peck to the press via Zoom. “And I think we go much more into his inner life and world, and it feels as though we’re treading ground that’s not been tread before. So, it’s a very delicate dance that I’m attempting with the wonderful cast and crew that we have. So that’s a constant challenge for me.”

Now Peck realizes he still has big shoes to fill on playing Spock. He has to walk that fine line of how he can portray the iconic character and put his own spin into it.
“There is a box and there are limitations. But the box, the more you zoom into the box, the infinitely larger it becomes,” he said. “And, so, in a way there are boundaries, but as we sort of zoom in on him and his life and his experiences in the past that we haven’t yet seen, unfolding our kind of infinite possibilities of him and his life.”
Peck continued, “So, again, it’s really delicate dance that we’re attempting. And I think a lot of it is done in the writing. I show up to work and I get a new script, and suddenly I’m faced with something that’s totally unfamiliar to me in my work as Spock. The sky is kind of the limit, in my opinion. But, there definitely are rules.
