Well this was a surprise to find this had been released today. I’m a huge fan of Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy and after the lacklustre Hollywood effort I am keen to see what the BBC can deliver.

The teaser is a mere 30 seconds long and give us nothing more than a few shots of certain characters. We see Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby, a glimpse of James McAvoy as Lord Asriel and even less of lead Dafne Keen as Lyra. We see a few shots of Clarke Peters as the Master of Jordan, but perhaps the most shown character in this short teaser is Ruth Wilson as Marissa Coulter, the villain of the piece.
It’s really hard to do any kind of analysis of the show, as we already know what is going on in this story. What matters to me and many other fans is if they have adapted the story in an interesting way? The previous movie version was like a vanilla adaptation and I want them to get into the more controversial aspects of the book in this show.
The cast all appear great, but then so was that cast from The Golden Compass and yet the overall movie wasn’t. It’ll be interesting to see how the new cast work out. The only surprising moments I saw in this teaser were the fact Mrs Coulter has brunette hair instead of blonde (no biggie) and the alethiometer looked a little strange compared to the pictures from the books.
There’s no word of a premiere date for His Dark Materials yet, so hopefully that will be the next piece of the jigsaw to be revealed along with possibly a full trailer.
Fingers crossed this is the real deal, as I think His Dark Materials is perhaps my favourite book series of all time.
What do you think of the short teaser and the cast, are you excited to see what this adaptation is like, or worried it won’t be any good again? Sound off in the usual place below as always.
