Text, Drugs, & Rock ‘N’ Roll: Scott Crawford Captures The Spirit Of CREEM Magazine [Exclusive Interview]

CREEM- America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine is now America’s only rock ‘n’ roll magazine documentary directed by Scott Crawford.

CREEM America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine secured its funding from rock fans across the globe with a Kickstarter campaign that surpassed its goal by thousands of dollars. The film took over four years to make but the the pages of CREEM Magazine have finally come to life in this new documentary film.

Founded in 1969 in Detroit, Michigan, the magazine started as a monthly publication with attitude and quickly became the city’s rock ‘n’ roll bible and integral part of music culture. This documentary details the birth of CREEM and goes behind the scenes in their newsroom, exposing the motley crew of outcast writers. Writers like Lester Bangs were known for brash articles that were heavily consumed by rock stars, rock fans, and other defectors of the norm. It also focuses on staff members getting caught up in the rock star lifestyle that subsequently led to the demise of this counterculture magazine.

Former CREEM writers and contributors as well as high profile musicians are all interviewed in this film. Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, MC5’s Wayne Kramer, Alice Cooper, R.E.M’s Michael Stipe and Gene Simmons of KISS are all fond of CREEM Magazine. These former subscribers share their personal connections and memories and help capture the true spirit of a magazine that was staple reading for its rabid followers who felt at home while lost in its pages.

Scott Crawford wrote and directed CREEM America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine and he’s no stranger to the music scene. In addition to this new documentary film, his previous masterpiece is Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington D.C. (1980-1990). On board as producer is J.J. Kramer, the son of the publications late co-founder and dysfunctional yet lovable visionary, Barry Kramer. The film also has CREEM alum writer and editor, Jaan Uhelszki, attached as a co-writer and producer.  Greenwich Entertainment will be distributing the film domestically. CREEM America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine is screening in select theaters as well as virtual theaters starting on August 7th.
