That Time Guillermo Del Toro Saw A UFO

Are we alone in the universe? This is a question that has plagued mankind ever since we realized we were sitting on a giant rock, getting shot through space. Are there other lifeforms out there, and if so, are they friendly or hostile?

Mankind has been seeing unidentified flying objects in the sky for countless years, but ever since the middle of the 20th century, these sightings have seen a definite uptick. However, despite all this attention, the actual presence of aliens is still up in the air.

Well, you can add one more person to the extensive list of UFO witnesses. Speaking with THR, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro recalled the time he saw something in the sky…and he wasn’t impressed.

“I saw a UFO. I know this is horrible. You sound like a complete lunatic, but I saw a UFO. I didn’t want to see a UFO. It was horribly designed.”

That there is a true filmmaker — one who can’t even take a moment to appreciate what he was even looking at because of how lame it looked. Guillermo continued with his story:

“I was with a friend. We bought a six-pack. We didn’t consume it, and there was a place called Cerro del Cuatro, ‘Mountain of the Four,’ on the periphery of Guadalajara. We said, ‘Let’s go to the highway.’ We sit down to watch the stars and have the beer and talk. We were the only guys by the freeway. And we saw a light on the horizon going super-fast, not linear. And I said, ‘Honk and flash the lights.’ And we started honking.”

“[The UFO] Went from 1,000 meters away [to much closer] in less than a second — and it was so crappy. It was a flying saucer, so clichéd, with lights [blinking]. It’s so sad: I wish I could reveal they’re not what you think they are. They are what you think they are. And the fear we felt was so primal. I have never been that scared in my life. We jumped in the car, drove really fast. It was following us, and then I looked back and it was gone.”

Gotta love that his reaction was both underwhelmed at how cliché the thing was, yet still scared of the experience he was having. But it sounds like he ended up in the right industry, where he can design things that look infinitely better than those uninspired discs.

Have you seen a UFO, and if so, did they look about as lame as del Toro claims? Let us know down below!
