Yesterday, fans got some welcome casting news in the form of Jeffrey Wright. In spite of the fact that J.K. Simmons had portrayed the beloved Commissioner Gordon in Zack Snyder’s Justice League film, The Batman director Matt Reeves has done a complete one-eighty, pretty much cementing this version of Batman as a completely different one from the DC Extended Universe.
But, as it turns out, they almost went in a completely different direction with the character, as Variety’s Justin Kroll shared on Twitter.
“Fun little fact to all the BATMAN news, prior to going out to Wright, Mahershala was in line for the role…and then BLADE came around”

I’d say “ouch” in regards to this news, but it’s not like Wright is a downgrade from Mahershala Ali. They just have very different feels to them. Either way, it seems clear that Reeves had no interest in remotely trying to match anything established in the DC Extended Universe so far, and this could very well be another pocket universe they decide to run with.
