The Batman: Ben Affleck Says He Didn’t Love It Enough To Make It Work

It’s hard not to look back on all the time Ben Affleck spent developing Batman as wasted potential. I mean, this is a multiple Oscar-winning filmmaker who also happens to be one of the best directors in the business. If there was one director out there who I would think would fit like a glove with the character of Batman (and his tendency to do crime thrillers), it’s Affleck.

But as we know now, he not only dropped out as director of the upcoming Batman film, but he’s now dropped out as the star of the film as well. It was an obnoxious, multi-year reveal on the part of the studio (despite the fact there were rumors of this as early as late-2016), but he’s officially stepped down. In a recent interview with ET, Affleck discussed how he broke the news to his son, where he said something I thought was pretty interesting:

“He took the news okay. He kind of understands that there’s time for everything. [Samuel] is not quite old enough to understand that I was gonna direct [a Batman movie], but I couldn’t figure out how to do it. I didn’t love it enough.”

“I just kinda stuck with like, you know, ‘It was my turn and now it somebody else’s turn.’ Because he understands turn taking.”

I’d like to highlight the line “I didn’t love it enough.” I think this here is the key component. We’ve heard comments from other talents that Ben Affleck’s script for The Batman was pretty amazing, and yet here we are getting no Affleck-directed Batman film.

Affleck has stated in the past that he wasn’t able to “crack” the character, but at the end of the day, I think this latest statement reveals more. The dude simply wasn’t in love with the character enough to make it work. He wasn’t in love with the character enough to push through the doubt. And all that’s okay. At the end of the day, it’s his career, it’s wonderful he allowed the project to be passed on to someone who did care enough to make it work. If he hadn’t, I’m sure he knew fans would notice.
