The Batman: DC Director/Storyboard Artist Praises Affleck’s Script as Best Ever

One day, long from now, we’ll all be watching the acclaimed documentary The Batman: What The Bleep Happened?! but until that day, we’ll continue to get bits and pieces of insight as this mysterious project keeps rolling along. The latest curious comment comes from artist and DC director Jay Oliva who took to Twitter to not only defend Ben Affleck’s script for The Batman but to go so far as to bestow upon it the honor of GOAT! (that’s Greatest Of All Time for all you non-sports ball folks):

He later reiterated his love for the script in a series of follow-up tweets.

A few thoughts on this instantly come to mind. First, while Oliva may not be a household name, he does have a certain level of credibility. His credits include serving as a storyboard artist on Man of Steel, Ant-Man, and Deadpool, as well as directing several animated films for DC including Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. He’s certainly had the opportunity to read many scripts featuring Batman, across a variety of types of movies, so he could have some contextual insight. I would like to ask him if he’s literally read the script to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, but I’ll leave that be.

This is curious because Affleck repeatedly stated that one of the reasons The Batman wasn’t moving forward was due to script issues. If his script, which he reportedly co-wrote with Argo scribe Chris Terrio, was as wonderful as Oliva contends then that would imply that Affleck was using that as an excuse to possibly make his exit from the DCEU. When all is said and done, it will be interesting to see what script current director Matt Reeves uses and if any of the original authors will receive a screenwriting credit.

Do you think at this point Affleck’s script for The Batman should be salvaged, or should Reeves’ create his own vision?
