The Batman Star Colin Farrell Praises Matt Reeves’ ‘Incredibly Original’ Script

Pattinson On How Different Tonally The Batman Is And Sequel Teases

The Batman to be “incredibly original”? Read on for more details!

For me, The Batman can’t show up soon enough. Sadly, 2020 is the one year where we have to expect virtually everything under the sun to be delayed indefinitely. This also goes for The Batman. Yes, it may be set for an October 2021 release date, but who knows when things will return to some semblance of normal. But regardless of when the film is coming, you can expect the expectations will be high. After all, Matt Reeves’ Gotham City-centered opus will be our first standalone Batman film since Nolan closed out his Dark Knight trilogy.

Given Matt Reeves’ brilliant work on the Planet of the Apes series, you can bet I’m excited. Plus, given everything we’ve heard about the villain-laden story we’ll be getting, it really does seem like we could be getting a definitive Batman story.

“The whole prospect is really exciting,” star Colin Farrell, who plays Penguin in the new film, told Games Radar. “I’m ecstatic to be part of that universe. There are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon and those words are Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent… all of those things.”

But we’ve seen a lot of Batman stories hit the big screen over the decades. Can Reeves truly live up to the high standard? And can he deliver a truly original story with this character, whose mythology is well-worn?

“I have been watching the Batman films with my kids,” Farrell continued. “But this script is something that feels incredibly original. It leans into it but it doesn’t borrow; it’s born of the mythology of that character, Bruce Wayne, Batman and Gotham. But it feels like a treatment and a version that I hadn’t seen before. Matt Reeves has done an incredible job of keeping it familiar and at the same time unique and new. It’s really exciting to be a part of it.”

If only we could dig into the specifics. Sadly, all we’ll be getting at any point in the future are little comments here and there, along with leaks. But, I suppose that’ll make the film all the better once it finally hits.
