The Batman: The Casting Of Robert Pattinson Was ‘Quicker Than Normal’

The Batman is a film that’s been gestating for a hell of a long time. Ever since Ben Affleck was announced to be taking on the Caped Crusader, many fans like myself waited for the inevitable reveal that he’d also be helming a standalone project. The reveal came and went, and before we even knew it, Affleck hopped out of the director role and then out of the Batman role altogether, leaving us with a seemingly-undecided future.

Then, not long after, War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves came on board, and has been slowly and quietly putting together a screenplay that will do the character justice. Only this past week did we find out that Batman would be played by Robert Pattinson, who became famous thanks to his work on the Twilight franchise.

This seemed like a decision a long time in the making, and felt to me like another slow and deliberate move from the studio…but I guess it happened relatively quickly, as a THR report illustrated.

“It was quick,” one Warners insider told them. “Quicker than normal.”

Apparently, Pattinson was one of the actors Reeves had in mind early on in the writing process, though he didn’t know whether or not the actor would be interested. What made him particularly attractive to Warner Bros. is that he hadn’t acted in the MCU yet, which is increasingly uncommon as that universe expands.

Reeves pored over both Pattinson’s and Nicholas Hoult’s work, and both were flown out to Burbank from Cannes to throw on the Batman costume Affleck wore to see how and if they embodied the character.

“(Reeves) wanted very specific things,” said one insider. “He knew what he was looking for.”

Apparently, the rest is history, resulting in Pattinson taking on the cowl, and I, for one, am very excited to see what kind of Batman he will be portraying.
