Netflix is home to countless hidden gems. Based on the sheer volume of content they put out on a weekly basis, you’d be forgiven for letting a show (or movie) or seven slip through the cracks every so often. Earlier this month, they dropped an interesting little series called The End of the F***ing World.

The series was based on a graphic novel, and was a twist on the typical “boy meets girl, boy ends up on road trip with girl” story. In it, we meet a boy named James, who is convinced that he is a psychopath, and decides he wants to kill someone. When a girl from school, Alyssa, takes a liking to him, he decides he wants to kill her. Through a series of events, the pair ends up on the road together, and so unravels an unorthodox coming of age story that really impressed the hell out of me.

The series has found a following online, and fans are already clamoring for a second season. Speaking with Collider, the show’s creator, Jonathan Entwistle discussed the possibility of this happening.

“I think it’s an interesting conversation and it’s one that we’ve been having at great length since the show kind of took off really. And literally, I get a thousand messages a day on social media about whether there’s going to be a Season 2 or not. And I just think that it’s … We’re exploring and we’re seeing what we can do to expand the world and see where we get to. But we conceived the show as, in a way, as a movie; a movie in structure. And I think that that is something we’re going to have to expand if we want a bigger story.”

Indeed the structure did feel more like a movie. While it is billed as a series, it’s really a limited series of eight episodes, each of which is around 23 minutes in length. In a way, it’s almost more like a three-hour movie than your typical series. What’s more, it ends with a sort of finality that making a sequel to it will be no easy matter.

He even made clear that it isn’t a decision they’d make lightly.

“No, no way. And I think that it’s interesting because the critics have been split on Season 2, and it’s been very interesting to sit back and look at what people have been saying about it. And I know that Netflix is very, very interested in the way people have been talking about Season 2, so it should be very interesting to see where we get to.”

If you haven’t seen the show, I highly recommend it. It’s a unique flavor of dark comedy that we don’t to see very often, and while the characters are people you’d never want in your life, it’s hard not to find them a bit endearing on the small screen.
