The Flash Movie ‘Restarts Everything’ Says Producer Barbara Muschietti

The Flash

Sounds like the Flash movie restarts everything…read on to find out more.

I may like the DC Extended Universe films, but the actual world is a hot mess. Luckily for Warner Bros., they’ve retconned this entire thing to be by design. Whenever there are contradictions, one could simply argue that it takes place in a slightly different universe. The Arrowverse TV shows have gone all-in on the multiverse angle, and it’s an angle that the DCEU will start riding soon enough. For years, fans have expected the standalone Flash film to bring that about.

For a good while, the film was titled Flashpoint, and while it’s still unclear if the title remains, the Flashpoint storyline will indeed be adapted. But how far will the movie goes in terms of turning things completely on its head? During a fan Q&A, producer Barbara Muschietti had some choice words to share.

“Well, I want you to go see it, so I’m not going to tell you a lot,” she said. “But what I will tell you is that it’s a ride. It’s going to be fun and exciting and there are a lot of DC characters in it. Flash is the superhero of this film because he is the bridge between all of these characters and timelines. And in a way, it restarts everything and doesn’t forget anything.”

Of course, given how the Flashpoint storyline incorporates many key members of the Justice League, this is no surprise. Additionally, we already know that both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck will pop up as Batmen from different Earths — Affleck being Barry’s home Earth. So, no one is going to accuse this Flash movie of lacking ambition. It is comforting to know that while it will restart thing, it’s not as though it will UNDO anything, if that makes sense. That past will still exist for The Flash.

Personally, I’ve never felt that the Flash film would actually need to address the incongruences in the DCEU, but it looks like they’re going that way. Since they’ve committed to it, I only hope they handle it properly. Juggling so many characters is no easy feat, and we’ve seen DC mishandle it in the past. So long as this tale stays strictly focused on the Flash. If they spend too much time exploring all the side stories, it runs the risk of growing too unwieldy for its own good.
