The Frozen 2 Trailer And Poster Carry Some Elemental Easter Eggs

So, as you all know, the Frozen 2 trailer dropped on YouTube earlier this morning, and if I’m being honest, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. While I adored the first movie, that movie had a very specific and lighthearted tone to it. It didn’t prevent it from going serious when it needed to, but it was by no means a “dark” movie, and more importantly, there was a real nonchalance to the logic behind Elsa’s power. Well, that all seemed to change with the new trailer.

Of course, the big takeaway here for a lot of people is the darker tone the trailer had. Not only did it tease an epic scale, but the hyperrealistic look of the ocean on the beach really gave this one a unique aesthetic that really sets itself apart from the first one…but I’m not even here to talk about that. As I mentioned above, that first movie didn’t really deal with the magic side of things too much and was more concerned with nailing down its emotional core story. This teaser — along with the new poster — were our first hints at them digging more into Elsa’s powers and the magic inherent in this world.

At the beginning of the teaser, we have Elsa essentially testing out her powers on the ocean, hinting at a greater understanding of her own self. Additionally, we get a moment between two unknown characters — a boy and a girl. The wind blows upward, carrying the boy character up, hinting at a potential for characters with different elemental abilities. Perhaps, for the first time, we’ll get to some a real internal logic to what we saw in that first movie.

This was further backed up by two things — a specific shot from the trailer and the new posters. First off, I’ll show you the shot in question.

Anna looks off a balcony to see a whole heap of crystals. If you look closely at them, you can see they all have symbols inside of them. My initial guess was that they are abstract representations of different elements. This was then backed up by the new poster, which we also shared.

As you can see, within the snowflake, you can see those different symbols, hinting at other characters with similar abilities as Elsa. Given the autumn motif going on in this movie, I suspect that wind will be the next big element we’ll be tackling, though how all the others would play into it, I can only guess. Were this a Marvel film, I’d assume each film could take on another element or season, but since it’s a Disney movie, I imagine they’d actually want to keep everything pretty self-contained.

Partway through the trailer, we do see Elsa fighting off what looks like some sort of fire-elemental being, but since we have very few details to go off of, it’s hard to infer much of anything. All I can assume is that the story will tackle either the origin of Elsa’s powers or a secret of the kingdom that involves all these elements.

But what did you make of this trailer and poster? What do you think the new film will tackle? Let us know your thoughts down below!
