The Genius Of Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso

Back in 2013, NBC came out with one of the greatest commercials ever. To promote the upcoming season of the English Premiere League NBC thought it would be great to show the difference between European and American Football.  That is when we were introduced to Ted Lasso played by Jason Sudeikis. A typical American Football coach hired to manage the Tottenham Hotspurs.  It was during his first press conference between manager and press we learned how bad of a decision that was. He had accepted a job without truly understanding what European football was. By the end of the promo Ted learns that he has been fired which is fitting. This promo was such a success that a second promo was made for the following season.

Fast forward to 2020 and the return of our favorite football manager. Series creator Brendan Hunt has been able to take a great promo and turn it into quality tv. Ted Lasso was met with success from the first episode that a second season has already been greenlit.  What this show does a great job is keep everything simple.  The story isn’t overcomplicated, the cast does a great job of leaning into everyones strengths, and the production reminds me of an eighties sitcom like Cheers.

What makes this show amazing is a combination of a diverse cast and a great script.  The diversity of the cast allows each character to shine with their own backstory from American Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) to Englishmen Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Nate (Nick Mohammed).  The show also does a great job to highlight the leading ladies Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and Keely (Juno Temple).  Even though some characters are made to be the antagonist the story gives each character heart and something to root for.

The star, Jason Sudeikis, is a successful actor that has had lead roles in films but to me this is his role. As we will always look at Steve Carrell as Michael Scott, with the success of this show we will look at Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso. No matter what role comes for Jason after this show I will always see him as Ted.

I highly recommend watching Ted Lasso if you have a subscription to Apple TV+. If you don’t this might be the show that changes your mind to subscribe. Ted Lasso is currently airing the first season on Apple TV+ with its first seven episodes already out and the remaining three out the next Fridays.
