Ever since it was first announced that Lucasfilm would be making a Han Solo spinoff film, fans have been wondering what kind of tone they’d be shooting for. What sort of subgenre would best encapsulate the personality of Han Solo.

It seems obvious — some sort of gangster flick, right? That only seems natural, since Han is so involved with the seedy underbelly of the Star Wars galaxy. Well, it sounds like that’s what director Ron Howard is going for — at least on one level, says actor Paul Bettany, who joined the production after directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired by Lucasfilm.

Here’s what he had to say when speaking to Total Film:

“It’s Han Solo’s story, and of course his story would be a caper. On one level it’s a gangster movie. That’s really interesting, because it’s within the canon but really different. It’s f**king Han Solo!”

Bettany then delved into his excitement at being a part of this film, and in it, he gave us the biggest clue so far as to who his character is… though that’s not saying much:

“Suddenly, I’m an intergalactic gangster and I’m walking down some stairs and an R2 unit goes by with some champagne, and I’m like… [drops jaw] I had that feeling that I hadn’t had since I was first on a film set – I was a little boy doing the best job in the world.”

On the wait for episode 9, we gonna need some SOLO

  • Momitchell

Let’s just hope it’s more along the lines (in style) of Rogue One than this latest fiasco TLJ.

Phantom Menace or The Last Jedi? Which is better?

Duel of the Fates > Rey/Ren guard beat down.
        Emo Ren > Yippee Skywalker
        Slow middle = Slow middle
        Pod racing > Horse racing
Ewan McGregor > Hamill being held back by Johnson
Fart/poop jokes = alien tit milk
Edge goes to Phantom. But that is just one fans opinion.

Rogue One… with the paper thin characters, baffling plot and no payoff?

      • Kindofabigdeal

That Vader scene was all the payoff I needed. And the space battle was as good as the Battle over Endor.

        • Moby85

Good points, Rogue One is low on my list (albeit with a fantastic third act) I need to watch TLJ and Rogue One close together in a binge and see what I think.

          • Kindofabigdeal

For all it’s errors I did like TLJ more than the first half of Attack of the Clones. I guess they all can’t be winners kid.

i hope this weekend last jedi sinks hard. and disney is scared that shit is going to follow into han solo numbers. teach them a lesson to respect george lucas and mark hamills vision for luke skywalker. johnson ruined star wars for me. i have zero desire to see anything star wars now.

When you hit rock bottom you can only go up.
Either that or Disney is going to ruin a second character from the original trilogy.

  • Moby85

What does Solo offer you ask? If the movie is a hit and Alden is good as Han Solo it probably spawns a trilogy of pre-Episode IV films.
