Ever since it was first announced that Lucasfilm would be making a Han Solo spinoff film, fans have been wondering what kind of tone they’d be shooting for. What sort of subgenre would best encapsulate the personality of Han Solo.
It seems obvious — some sort of gangster flick, right? That only seems natural, since Han is so involved with the seedy underbelly of the Star Wars galaxy. Well, it sounds like that’s what director Ron Howard is going for — at least on one level, says actor Paul Bettany, who joined the production after directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired by Lucasfilm.

Here’s what he had to say when speaking to Total Film:
“It’s Han Solo’s story, and of course his story would be a caper. On one level it’s a gangster movie. That’s really interesting, because it’s within the canon but really different. It’s f**king Han Solo!”
Bettany then delved into his excitement at being a part of this film, and in it, he gave us the biggest clue so far as to who his character is… though that’s not saying much:
“Suddenly, I’m an intergalactic gangster and I’m walking down some stairs and an R2 unit goes by with some champagne, and I’m like… [drops jaw] I had that feeling that I hadn’t had since I was first on a film set – I was a little boy doing the best job in the world.”
