The latest Marvel Barside Buzz may give us the skinny on The Leader’s true role in Captain America: Brave New World. The Leader, aka Samuel Sterns is a known player in Brave New World. However what his exact function is, remains a mystery. Is he a villain already? Is he instead just working for President Ross and has a turning to villain arc in the movie?

Well, according to insider CWGST, The Leader is very much an antagonist. However, that fact is not seemingly known by the protagonists. The Insider says The Leader will be the secret benefactor of the Serpent Society. This group of villains can be confirmed as being in the movie also due to set photos before the strikes.

I guess if this rumor pans out, then it’s not so secret anymore. I doubt however that Marvel would try to hide Sterns villainous side from the audience. I could see the characters being unaware Sterns has his own agenda, (until such time as the plot dictates they need to know). As for what Sterns may be up to with the Serpent Society, we can make some guesses. There are two upcoming Marvel projects which seem to be delving into the biotechnology and bio-weapon realms.

Brave New World itself is rumored to revolve around the acquisition of Adamantium. Possibly we could even see the beginnings of the Weapon X program. Equally, the Serpent Society are said to use biotech to give themselves enhanced abilities. My guess is that Sterns is running this bio-weapon program for the US and the black market. The other project I spoke of is Ironheart. Rumors say that Mephisto (through The Hood) is trying to access bio-weapons technology. However, that’s about as much as we have and for now I can’t see any direct links.

I doubt fans would be surprised to find out The Leader was back and really the villain all along. It felt like that was always happening from the onset. However, you never can quite tell if Marvel will pull a twist on the comics in the MCU. That remains the case for now, as remember this is just a rumor.
