Santa Claus gets gritty in Fatman trailer.
Santa Claus is a character who has had countless interpretations over the decades. I mean, someone who can squeeze down chimneys and reverse-burgle people’s houses is simply ripe for constant reinvention. Of course, one of the prime examples from my youth was The Santa Clause, starring Tim Allen. Here was a kid-friendly, and yet-somewhat-jaded take on the legend that modernized him for audiences. And lest we forget more recent films like The Christmas Chronicles, which saw Kurt Russell don the red hat.
But what if we got a unique and gritty sort of reboot? No, I don’t mean in a horrific and overly-exploitative way. I mean, one that just sees Chris Kringle as more of an old and jaded toy-delivering veteran who feels more at home in a dark snow-covered western than a standard Christmas movie. Oh yeah, and what if a kid put a hit on him for delivering coal?
Does it sound too good to be true? Let me present you…Fatman:

Below is the official synopsis for the action-comedy, Fatman:
To save his declining business, Santa Claus is forced into a partnership with the military, but a devious 12-year-old hires a hitman to kill the jolly elf after getting a lump of coal in his stocking.”
Seriously, I for one am digging the tone of this trailer. While I don’t know whether or not this carries over, I appreciate how seriously it’s taking its source material. Yes, it’s ridiculous, but no one is winking at the camera, and I think a lot of that is owed to Mel Gibson seemingly treating this as a more standard action film.
