The Lion King Full Trailer Brings The Nostalgia

Early Wednesday morning, Walt Disney Studios released the full trailer for the upcoming Jon Favreau-directed “Live CGI” film The Lion King. Within the first hour, the trailer had already hit over 278,000 views. Given the film is a retelling of one of Disney’s most popular animated films and has one of Hollywood’s current top directors attached to it, Disney is looking for blockbuster gold.

Judging by the trailer, the film seems to stay very close to the original animated classic, following young lion prince Simba as he dreams of his future as king. When his father, King Mufasa, is killed in a stampede caused by his evil uncle Scar—who then pins the death on Simba—the young cub runs away from his future kingdom. However, as the original film taught us, there is no escaping your destiny and Simba will soon learn that he must return home to claim the throne that is rightfully his.

I won’t hide my bias here. Of all the upcoming non-Marvel, non-Pixar Disney projects coming up, this is the one I’m excited for. The 1994 film is still my favorite of the Disney animated classics and once it was announced that Favreau would be at the helm, I was in. Plus, look at that cast: Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofer, Beyoncé, Alfre Woodard, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Eric André, John Oliver, John Kani, and the great James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa. Basically, take my money now, Bob Iger. Rip it right out of my hands and pat me on the head.
