The Lion King: Special Look Features Beyoncé Knowles As Nala

If you just got back from watching Aladdin these past couple of weekends and still have a live-action Disney itch that needs scratching, fret not, because The Lion King is on the way. Yes, I have had plenty of annoyed things to say about this film simply because it’s such a retread of the original. But after Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, I’ve given up trying to pretend the movies will be anything less than a joy to watch in live-action form on the big screen.

This trend seems guaranteed to continue in The Lion King. Sure, it’s not technically live-action, but as director Jon Favreau recently made clear, it’s all about audience expectation. When looking at this, your mind instantly automatically thinks live-action, so you may as well play into these expectations by calling it live-action. Well, no matter what you call it, all I know is they have me. If nothing else, this’ll be a gorgeous feast for the eyes.

Below is the official synopsis for The Lion King:

“Director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon. Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way, Disney’s “The Lion King” roars into theaters on July 19, 2019.”
