According to a report The Mandalorian and Grogu looks set for a slightly better than predicted opening weekend domestically. Perhaps that is due to much higher audience scores for the film when compared to what critics thought. However, I think we are very far from calling this film a success.
Let’s get into it,
A new report by Variety analyses the opening 4 day weekend for the latest Star Wars movie. Cut a long story short, the trade says that the film should come out of this 4 day weekend with $102M and it managed $82M from the traditional weekend period. Expected domestic was $80M over the weekend and so the film has very slightly exceeded those predictions.
That being said, the film has still come out lower than Solo, which had the previous record for lowest opening weekend. The difference here though is that Solo cost around $300M and this film closer to $165M and therefore can make a profit still from these numbers.
According to THR, the movie cost $160 million to produce and at least $100 million to market. Therefore, Disney will hope for a final gross of $500 million to $600 million to turn a profit. That’s globally mind and at the moment it seems like it’s possible, but certainly not guaranteed.

The thing with Star Wars tends to be that all the die hard Star Wars fans go see it opening weekend and the casual audience wait and see. Critics scores for this film are poor but it is worth pointing out the audience scores on RT are now sitting at like 88%, plus the CinemaScore is A-. Yet, at the same time I hear a common theme running.
Those who like it keep saying how much mindless fun it is, and those who dislike it say it’s mindless fun. The problem is that one group seem to accept mindless fun where Mando just wins every battle he faces is good. The other group are asking where is the challenge, character growth, or any emotional investment?
So, yeah, The Mandalorian and Grogu and has performed slightly better than was predicted. However, it’s still not much of a great success and even some Star Wars fans who like everything thought it was shallow and not worthy of a feature film. It seems like this one is best watched on Disney+ where it probably belongs.
I think I’ll wait for streaming at this point, or home video at least.
Have you seen The Mandalorian and Grogu yet, is it fun but shallow and pointless? Drop your thoughts below.
