This goes against what most suspected, but Jon Favreau says The Mandalorian and Grogu was not adapted from the Mando Season 4 scripts. Speaking with SFX the creator of The Mandalorian and the writer/director of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Favreau talked about what those Season 4 scripts entailed.
“You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie,” Favreau told SFX magazine in the latest issue. “There were a lot of characters, it assumed you’d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of ] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline].”
“This is a completely different medium,” he continued, “so I had to start from scratch, essentially. There were certain things I wanted to pursue, like the idea of Grogu being the Mandalorian’s apprentice. As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, you’ll know these characters well, even if you’ve never seen the show. But there’s still a lot of Star Wars in there. You’re going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesn’t diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film.”

The outlet doesn’t go into any more detail. However, my guess is, the question most people may ask is will there ever be a Season 4 of The Mandalorian? Perhaps more will come out when the magazine hits shelves.
Given Favreau’s comments it seems likely those season 4 scripts would have to be completely retooled as the Universe has moved on. Ahsoka Season 2 will have came and gone before there is ever even a chance at Season 4 of Mando.
I think the most obvious answer is, it will depend how well The Mandalorian and Grogu performs at the box office. If the film is considered a hit, then chances are there will be a sequel instead of a TV series. If the film does not do well, perhaps Lucasfilm will look to bring it back to the TV medium? Current box office estimate for opening weekend are on the lower side. However we are in a different world now and positive word of mouth from early adopters may help to make it a hit yet.
Not long till we find out.
