The Mandalorian: How Jon Favreau And Dave Filoni’s Relationship Is Like A Lawyer In Judge

Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s relationship is an interesting one.

If you’ve been talking to people in Star Wars fandom, you’ll know there’s a lot of love for Dave Filoni. He’s the spearheader of a lot of the big animated Star Wars projects, and in the eyes of many, one of the most positive things to come out of Lucasfilm since George Lucas himself. And then you have Jon Favreau. He may be relatively new to the Star Wars game, but his shepherding of The Mandalorian to the smalls screen made him an instant hit. And let’s not forget that he’s the one responsible for launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man.

You can’t help but wonder what the relationship between these two is. Sure, Filoni may have acted as director of some episodes in the show, but given his great wealth of in-universe knowledge, you have to know he’d be involved in a deeper way. Favreau confirmed as much when discussing the process of working with Filoni.

“I’ll come up with ideas and sometimes Dave will say, ‘You can’t do this in Star Wars.’ Then I’ll cite examples from the movies, or Clone Wars, to try to use as a justification,” Favreau said to EW. “I’m like a lawyer talking to a judge; I am to him as he was to George. I won’t do anything without Dave’s approval. And to his credit, he understands that Stars Wars needs to be fun and ever-evolving.”

Sounds like a solid combination. One one end you have someone spearheading stories, and on the other, you have the guy making sure it all matches up within the universe. But Filoni sounds especially adept at knowing that they need to keep pushing things. If Star Wars were to stop evolving, fans would grow bored very quickly.

While I’ve criticized The Mandalorian in the past for being overly-simple and familiar, there is clearly something there that resonates with fans worldwide. We will have to see how Season 2 works out, but this could be one of the great working relationships over at Lucasfilm to keep an eye on.
