It’s easy for the uninitiated to look at the titular Mandalorian bounty hunter in The Mandalorian and assume this guy either has a connection to Boba Fett or is Boba Fett. And it would make sense for Disney to have gone with the fan-favorite character, but instead, they opted to go with an all-new character.
But how different is the Din Jarren from Boba Fett, physically? While they certainly resemble one another, do they actually LOOK like one another? Dave Filoni, one of the directors of The Mandalorian had a chance to open up about some of the key differences. Here’s what he said.
“Our character’s much more bulked up than Boba ever was. His armor’s actually quite different, if you look at it. His helmet’s quite different, little traits to it. The colors of it, you know, all these things point out all these differences. There are similarities which are almost unavoidable, but we wanted to tell a story with somebody where we kinda had more of a blank page to write it.”
I agree with him on the differences. At face value, he certainly resembles the original character, but when you actually look at Boba Fett’s armor in those original movies, it doesn’t really look nearly as practical or cool as Din Jarren’s.
Of course, if you want to hear Filoni talk more about what the Mandalorian helmet represents, and how hardcore fans have already gotten used to seeing it used in different ways, you can check out the full video below.
