The Marvels budget is a bit bigger than we first thought. Yesterday we covered some information from Vanity Fair which seemed to indicate the budget for the upcoming Nia Da Costa movie was $130M. On top of that I had commented that it may be easier for the movie to find a profit margin with such a small budget. However, since then Disney has revealed that the budget was actually much higher for the movie.
As reported by Forbes, Disney has revealed a budget of $270M for The Marvels. Although tax cuts mean the production managed to save £44.4 million from the U.K. where the movie was made. Overall that means a budget of $219.8 million.
Ergo, in order to make a profit, The Marvel will have to make around $450-500m when you factor in theatre cuts and marketing budgets. It is absolutely possible for a Marvel movie to hit those kind of figures. However, these days it is far from being a guarantee. We’ve seen poor word of mouth seriously affect Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and we’ve seen positive word of mouth effect Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Yesterday we covered a story that Ms Marvel Season 2 was on hold until after The Marvels. If that series is dependent on The Marvels making a profit, then these new figures give us a better idea of what numbers to watch for. There was a time when just being an MCU movie would have probably guaranteed a profit domestically alone. Now I think it will take the global figure to help this one get over the threshold. Though, it does depend how well, or not, the movie is received by audiences.
So, if you are a Ms Marvel fan and want to see Season 2, make sure you go watch The Marvels in theatres. I won’t lie, I really can’t see me catching The Marvels at theatres. Instead I’m just more likely to wait for the Disney+ stream. I find myself less and less interested in the MCU these days.
What do you think as The Marvels has a bigger budget than we first thought, and reported? Thoughts below as always.
