With The Matrix 4 on the way we look back and think about the franchise that is one of cinema’s most bittersweet symphonies. The first film is hands down one of the best ever made. It’s also a huge mindf**k in one of the best possible ways. The two sequels that followed were, and I’ll be polite, just awful. What went from an awesome concept turned into from what I remember, a B-level, and subpar sci-fi war film. The rabbit hole concept from the original seemed to be all but abandoned.
The man known as the ‘Internets Boyfriend’, actor Keanu Reeves is returning to reprise his role as Neo. Reeves recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and discussed the high-anticipated fourth entry into the Matrix franchise. You can check out what he had to say below.
“Created a beautiful story and a beautiful script.”
The actor who turned 56 today added the following:
” [He is] really grateful to be here and be a part of this story.”
Now while the Wachowskis likely have no intention of retconning, as a fan, I see this as a perfect opportunity to fix parts two and three of the franchise. To me, the sequels were as damaging to the franchise as the eighth season of Game of Thrones was to the television series.
Not much is know about the upcoming Matrix 4. One thing that we do know is, unfortunately, Hugo Waving will not be returning to the franchise. I do take comfort in the thought that the Wachowskis likely wouldn’t go forward with the project without having something really good for us. Keanu Reeves returning is also a good sign. However, we won’t know for sure until the film is released on April 1, 2022.
