The MCU Could Be Bringing Back Sam Raimi To Direct The Doctor Strange Sequel

Before there was the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the MCU for short, in the early 2000’s we had the the Spider-Man trilogy from Sony Pictures that even came before Warner Bros. Pictures’ Dark Knight trilogy that started in 2005. The Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man trilogy kicked off in 2002 with Spider-Man, then Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and wrapped up with everyone’s favorite Spider-Man 3 in 2007. These films helped launch the modern day superhero films. Why is this relevant in 2020?

This is because Marvel Studios has been in search for a new director to take over the the reigns of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was vacated by Scott Derrickson after creative differences, although he will remain on the film as an executive producer. Today Variety is reporting that their search may be over as Marvel is in talks with Raimi to direct the Dr. Strange sequel. It is important to note that Marvel has not commented on the subject.

In this sequel Benedict Cumberbatch will once again take on the role of Dr. Strange for the fourth time after appearing in Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also expected to return to the film. The film is also expected to feature Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch who’s role will apparently link up with her upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, that will debut in December. The only character not returning is Rachel Adam’s Christine Palmer.

If in fact they decide to go with Raimi for this sequel it would interest me to see how well they work together and if before it’s all set and done they don’t end up looking for a new director again. I say this because the MCU seems to bring in directors who haven’t done too many blockbuster films (at the time) like a Joss Whedon, the Russo brothers, James Gunn, Ryan Coogler and Taika Waititi (who is currently in demand everywhere). Raimi of course has already helmed his own superhero trilogy as well as a horror trilogy with The Evil Dead. He would be the most established filmmaker they bring in since Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston who directed Thor and Captain America.

I would hope that they would give him a little bit of a longer leash to put together the film in his vision but in the end we all know that the Mouse probably won’t allow that. If they hire Raimi let’s just hope he brings the same energy as Spider-Man 2 and not Spider-Man 3.
