The MCU reacts to James Gunn Being Rehired For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Yesterday was an exciting day in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. James Gunn was rehired to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. If you weren’t aware, Gunn was fired last July for old tweets featuring highly inappropriate content. To be honest, I was surprised when Gunn was hired by Marvel in the first place due to his association with Troma. Finding the line and then crossing it by a mile is what Troma does, and Gunn had been involved with stuff like Tromeo and Juliet. Disney should have known the guy had things that many would find unappealing or inappropriate in his past.

Immediately following his firing, MCU fans, actors, and filmmakers expressed their support for him. Dave Bautista was one of the most vocal and even made it seem like he may walk away from the role of Drax if Marvel and Disney didn’t at least use Gunn’s script.

Now we’re seeing many people connected to the industry as well as other media outlets expressing their joy at the news:

Even funny tweets relating to past rumors:

Of course, James Gunn had some words himself:

If you search #JamesGunn you’ll see support pouring in from fans as well, and a few good memes with Bautista and a recent WWE appearance.

It’s not all puppy dogs and rainbows though. The person most people accuse of bringing Gunn down in the first place, Mike Cernovich, tweeted that he’s receiving “demonic energy” from Gunn fans in the wake of the rehiring. His tweet contains some of the inappropriate posts from Gunn so I will not publish them but you can for the tweet easily enough.

I am a firm believer in the freedom of speech and the idea that even hurtful speech should be protected lest we give our governments too much power to dictate what is hurtful and what is not. You can end up with the inability to express dissent rather quickly like that. However, there are lines that can be crossed, even in the pursuit of comedy, and a private business (Disney in this case) can decide that crossing the line is damaging to their image and fire someone. Considering Guinn hadn’t posted anything that crude in many years was a sign he had grown out of being a provocateur or troll. It didn’t excuse his actions, but knowing all of the facts puts them in context.

Are you happy James Gunn is back on Guardians of the Galaxy? What do you think of internet reactions?
