Kevin Feige – Captain Marvel WILL Be At The Forefront Of The MCU

Whether you like it or not, Captain Marvel is a hit. I saw the movie on opening day and found it entertaining but with flaws, and I gave it a B- overall. It is a chink in the armor of the MCU though. It has more issues than any movie save Thor: The Dark WorldThe Incredible HulkCaptain America: The First Avenger, and maybe Iron Man 2. In addition to being a mostly mediocre film, there’s a lot of controversy around the film mostly due to comments made by Brie Larson in the weeks leading up to the release. This makes recent comments from Kevin Feige a little worrisome:

“When we found out that Brie Larson might be interested in joining our world, we had a number of meetings. She was a huge fan of the character in the comics. One of the highlights of my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her come out on stage and stand there with literally almost everybody else from our movies. There she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing – not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve been told that Captain Marvel will be a major leader going forward, but after seeing the movie it worries me more. I thought Brie Larson did a fine job playing Carol Danvers but the character didn’t have a lot of depth. The character doesn’t feel relatable in any way to me. Besides her memory issues, there is no real vulnerability to her. One of the key things to the success of Marvel characters, in books and on screen, is relatability. Without that, these characters become boring.

We can also debate about whether or not she’s overpowered but until she fights another powered being we don’t really know how powerful she is. I’ve heard people point out how she flies in space and destroys warships with ease, but Thor was crashing through the transport ships in Infinity War and also hung out in the vacuum of space. I know he’s a god, but Captain Marvel’s power comes from a source that easily explains why she is so powerful. I do believe she needs some drastic changes in Avengers: Endgame in order to be relatable. My opinion, shared by quite a few if you can believe the interwebs, is the complete opposite of Kevin Feige:

“The great thing about Captain Marvel is she is a human. She’s a real person, Carol Danvers, who gets these incredible powers and who has these amazing adventures in outer space. But as with all of the best Marvel characters, she needs to be very human. So this is not just about somebody who is incredibly powerful and can fly around and shoot photon blasts out of her hands; it’s somebody who’s very human, who’s very vulnerable, and who has multiple dimensions.”

I’m not sure if he’s actually seen, Captain Marvel based on those comments.

So what about her being the leader of the MCU after next month’s Avengers: Endgame? Will we get a new team of Avengers? Will she return to space to lead SWORD or another team? Who will be the next big bad?

I am not against her being the leader or face of the MCU going forward, but she needs some character work.
