The Mortal Kombat Reboot Opens The Door For A Cinematic Universe

If you haven’t heard yet, the Mortal Kombat franchise is finally receiving a long-awaited and long-overdue reboot. The movies of the 1990s were slightly above being awful, and fans such as myself believe the series deserves better. So far, everything we know about this reboot seems to be shaping up to do just that.

Today we learn that not only are we getting a reboot but that the new film will serve as a springboard to a shared Mortal Kombat universe. Ludi Lin, who has taken on the role of the new Liu Kang recently spoke with JayneStars and discussed the world that director Simon McQuaid has built. You can check it out below.

“It was the most fighting that I’ve ever done before. Director Simon McQuoid is very devoted to this world. He is very passionate about building a universe of Mortal Kombat, rather than one single fight film. He started a back story of the entire world and made sure to flesh out the characters, so that people feel it’s not just a video game and there is some substance behind it.”

They could do quite a lot with what they have to work with, solo films focusing on our favorite Earth realm warriors, and possibly films going in-depth about Outworld and the characters who reside there. The official Mortal Kombat canon will likely need to be streamlined for this to happen, as MK‘s official story is somewhat of a glorious mess.
