Good news is it sounds like Wonder Woman is likely to hold the number one spot in the coming weekend, allowing it to truly succeed in the weeks to come, likely resulting in an overall strong domestic haul for the latest DC Extended Universe film. Of course, for Wonder Woman to succeed so wonderfully, it seems like The Mummy had to fail. The critics have spoken, and The Mummy has fallen woefully short of expectations in their eyes, with only 19 percent of critics giving the film a positive review (out of 126 reviews so far).
It looks like either the strengths of Wonder Woman or the weak reviews for The Mummy are having an effect. According to Deadline, the Thursday preview screenings have resulted in a hauntingly low number of $2.66 million. For reference, Wonder Woman had a Thursday haul of $11 million last Thursday (not to mention a $9 million haul yesterday).
So what does this mean for The Mummy’s opening weekend? Well, it looks like it may very well fall short of its already low $35 million to $42 million haul that was predicted earlier this week. The outlet is reporting that a $32 million opener is more likely. This is especially disheartening given the big plans Universal has for this Dark Universe of monsters.
However, while things are looking pretty damn morbid for The Mummy on the domestic front, it can’t be ignore what’s going on overseas. As we reported yesterday, The Mummy is set to take in $125-$135 million total from its opening weekend in 63 territories outside of North America. Add that to the expected $32 million, and you still have the potential to push $170 million worldwide, which is about as good as the worldwide opening of War of the Worlds — Cruise’s best worldwide opening yet.
In short, while things may not be looking good domestically, it can’t be forgotten how much of a role the rest of the world has to play in securing this Dark Universe’s future. We’ll be keeping an eye at the worldwide number on this one. It’s sure to be an interesting weekend.
