The New Batman Trilogy From Matt Reeves To Feature The Joker — Is This A Bad Thing? | LRM’s Barside Buzz

The new Batman trilogy will apparently feature the Joker.

We’re getting a new Batman soon. That isn’t really news. Basically, at any point going forward until the apocalypse, there will be a Batman film in development. But we know that one is coming from director Matt Reeves and that Robert Pattinson will be the star. The movie has already started its production and is well on its way to becoming a reality. In fact, if we’re to believe Reeves himself, we’ll be getting a definitive version of Batman in his movie — one that fully utilizes its rogues’ gallery on film for the first time.

But if there’s any member of the rogues’ gallery we’re not expecting, it’s the Joker. By no fault of Matt Reeves, the Joker has received a lot of exposure on screen in recent years already. He was on Gotham, on Suicide Squad, and in the standalone film Joker. While I can’t speak for everyone, I feel confident in saying that the Joker quota has been filled for fans for some time. Yes, he’s a great villain, but we need just a little more time to pass before we see him again.

That’s why it’s a tad bit surprising that we might be seeing the Clown Prince of Crime in Matt Reeves’ upcoming trilogy of Batman movies. This news comes from TheDirect — and more specifically, scooper Daniel Richtman. According to him, the Joker will be referenced in The Batman and will play a role as one of the multiple villains in the second and third movies.

I know. It’s very possible we’re all Joker’d out. Between the three I just mentioned above, I think many of us are ready to let the other villains shine. However, this isn’t a bad thing. For starters, there is so much you can do with the Joker as a villain that hasn’t even been attempted in live-action form. But one big key thing is that we likely won’t even be getting a second film for another three to four years after the next one hits. By that point, we may be ready to see what Reeves has to offer in the evil clown department.

One thing to point out is that this report seems to rule out the possibility of seeing Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker appear alongside Pattinson’s Batman. So, feel free to curse or rejoice as you see fit.

Personally, I think this is great news. While I do think the Joker is currently overplayed, Matt Reeves is a director I really want to see work with the character. Based on his previous work, I don’t see him doing a version of the Joker that doesn’t intrigue me on many different levels. Plus, from the sound of it, the Joker will only be one piece in the proverbial villain puzzle.  And man, do we need more stories that utilize the Joker in this way.
