The New Mutants was an unexpected little from the get-go. Initially pitched as sort of a YA version of X-Men, it quickly turned into something very different. With horror and Stephen King aficionado Josh Boone at the helm, it makes sense in retrospect that it would turn into a horror film.

The film was shot, and we even got a trailer for it. But last month, it was revealed that the film would get pushed back from April of this year to February of next year. The reason was supposedly to make the film scarier, but one of its stars, Maisie Williams recently commented on the delay, making it seem like it was more because of the visual effects than the narrative.

So what’s the real story? A new report from THR has an interesting tidbit embedded in a much bigger story, which we’ve picked apart throughout today. According to the report, Fox is scheduling additional photography for the film this summer, and this additional photography will apparently insert a new character into the narrative.

As always with reshoots, our greatest fear is that the film will end up feeling like a Frankensteined mess. Given how unique The New Mutants is, and how much I want to see superhero-horror films thrive, I hope it doesn’t negatively affect the film.
