The Nun Tracking For Best Opening In The Conjuring Franchise

Crazy Rich Asians may have reigned supreme at the box-office for three solid weekends in a row, but its reign is coming to an end. This coming weekend see the release of The Nun, the latest entry in the long-running The Conjuring shared universe of films, which so far consists of The Conjuring and Annabelle.

With the exception of the first Annabelle film, this is a shared universe that is characterized by its high quality. Sure, it may have some of the jumpscares that I hate so much, but at the end of the day, they are supported by a solid backbone of truly creepy horror mythology that story junkies like me get to eat up. Given the franchise’s overall quality, it makes sense that The Nun would be aiming for a solid opening.

According to Deadline, it is tracking to hit somewhere between $36 million and $45 million domestically. So how does that compare to other domestic openings in the franchise? Let’s have a look:

The Conjuring – $41.9M
The Conjuring 2 – $40.4M
Annabelle – $37.1M
Annabelle: Creation – $35.0M

So, as it stands, there is a very small window it needs to exceed to come out on top, and so long as critics get behind The Nun, there’s a good chance it could just about break that $41.9 million opening set by The Conjuring.

But what do you think? Does a film called The Nun stand a chance of capitalizing on the brand name recognition of The Conjuring in the same way the Annabelle films did? Sound off down below!
