The Obi-Wan Kenobi show will be a limited series.
The world of television has changed a hell of a lot in the United States. The past decade has seen serialized stories take center stage. All of a sudden, shows are story-centric rather than wholly situational in nature. In the past, a show would be expected to go on pretty much forever. Now, they tend to go on as long as they need to tell the story they want to tell.
Marvel Studios is even playing with the format. Based on everything we’ve seen, none of their shows seemed to be teeing up second seasons. Instead, shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision appear to be one-off stories with ends in sight. But what about Star Wars? They have seemingly half a million shows in the works, so are any of them better suited to the limited series format?
Well, if there is one story that is a good fit for a limited series, it’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ show. After all, how many adventures could an old hermit go on before people on Tatooine start to notice? But is it an approach Lucasfilm would have the guts to go forward with? Speaking with TheWrap, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy inadvertently revealed that they would when asked about their priority to utilize female directors.

“It’s absolutely a priority,” Kennedy said. “It’s been very exciting to see the talent that’s come in. And we’re now developing the limited Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Deborah Chow, and she’s just been doing a phenomenal job.”
Given that Chow is leading the fray on the Obi-Wan series, it makes sense they’d continue to prioritize the female talent on this project. But, let’s talk about the limited series aspect. Personally, I think this is the right move for them. You want audiences to want more when a story ends, and this is especially the case for Obi-Wan as a character. He was already massively disserviced in the Prequel Trilogy, and poor Ewan McGregor still managed to make it work. This is the series he was deserved, and like many, I really hope they do it right.
The best way to do that is to ensure that the story they tell has a solid beginning, middle, and end. I don’t want Obi-Wan’s side story to become an inflated mess just because Lucasfilm wants to milk it for all it’s worth. Plus, if what we’ve heard is correct, the story started off as a film, so there wouldn’t be much room for growth unless they massively reworked it.
