While Taika Waititi has been in the industry for well over twenty years, his recent work with both the film and television adaptations of What We Do In The Shadows and the blockbuster MCU installment Thor: Ragnarok gave the New Zealand actor and filmmaker instant recognition. Recently, Waititi made the entertainment news cycle with the revelation at San Diego Comic Con that he would be returning to direct Thor: Love And Thunder. However, before once again placing his hands on Mjulnir and exploring the psyche of Marvel’s favorite Asgardian, Waititi has what is being dubbed an “anti-hate satire” on Adolf Hitler called Jojo Rabbit. The synopsis for the film is rather short. Jojo Rabbit tells the tale of a young boy in Hitler’s army named Jojo (newcomer Roman Griffin Davis) who discovers that his mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson)is secretly hiding a young Jewish girl in their home. In the trailer, Jojo refers to his imaginary friend for help, who just so happens to be Adolf Hitler (played by Waititi himself). While the teaser doesn’t give a way too much, it does give a glimpse of Waititi’s satirical performance as Hitler, uttering the line “People used to say a lot of nasty things about me: ‘Oh, this guy’s a lunatic. Oh, look at that psycho, he’s gonna get us all killed'” followed by a comical shrug.
The film also stars Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, and Thomasin McKensie. The film is based on the novel by Christine Leunens, which Waititi adapted into a screenplay. The film is scheduled to be released October 18th of this year.
