The One and Only Ivan is one of the best children’s tales in modern times.

A film adaptation fitted perfectly as a Disney family film, particularly for Disney+

Based on the 2012’s book by Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Ivan is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization, and the significance of the place one calls home. Ivan is at 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella, the elephant, Bob the dog, and various other animals. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from, and where he ultimately wants to be.

The film stars Sam Rockwell as the voice of Ivan. Other stars voicing various animal creatures included Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren, Brooklynn Prince, Chaka Khan, Mike White, Ron Funches, and Phillipa Soo. The live actors included Bryan Cranston as Mack, the mall’s owner, Ramon Rodriguez, and Ariana Greenblatt.

Thea Sharrock directed the movie from a screenplay adaptation written by Mike White.

I’m a sucker for these types of family films. The combination of animals, homesick storytelling, friendship, and family are perfect. The children’s book even won the Newbery Medal Award and landed as the number one spot in the New York Times bestseller list back in 2013. There’s also a follow-up sequel book, in which Disney will be most likely to adapt too.

The One and Only Ivan will be streamed exclusively on Disney+ on August 14.
