The Part Of Aquaman James Wan Pulled From The Karate Kid

This past weekend, one of the highlights of San Diego Comic-Con came in the form of the Aquaman trailer. After years of wondering just what in the hell an Aquaman film could actually feel like, we got our first taste at what looks to be a fun adventure film that feels part superhero film, part Indiana Jones. But it turns out we may get a little bit of something extra as well. That’s right, I’m talking about martial arts film…kinda.

In the trailer, there was a part where we saw a young Arthur Curry catch a trident with his bare hands. Speaking to Fandango about that scene, James Wan discussed the influence of The Karate Kid, saying:

“There was a part of me that wanted to have a Miyagi/Daniel-san moment in the movie where he’s training him on the beach, basically. The only thing he’s not doing is the crane kick.

For me, anyway, what makes origin stories and origin superhero stories really fun is just watching the training sequences. Watching how they become who they are, and that is a sequence in the movie where his mentor, played by Willem Dafoe, Vulko, trains the boy. How to potentially use the trident. When Willem and I spoke very early on, we always saw him as an old school samurai warrior, like an Obi-Wan Kenobi training Luke Skywalker. That was the influence, and Willem is such a big fan of Toshiro Mifune. He’s modeling himself after Toshiro Mifune in all the classic Kurosawa films, even down to the way Willem looks in the movie. His hair is pulled back into a bun like a samurai warrior, and his sword’s behind his back.”

Hot damn, I love the fact that Wan is bringing up the legendary Toshiro Mifune in this. For those who don’t know, he was a common figure in Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films, and played the most human character Seven Samurai, Kikuchiyo, in addition to countless other movies. In many of his films, Mifune is a bona fide badass, and I love that Dafoe will be taking a page from that book.

Additionally, I can’t wait to see just what kind of training montage we’ll be getting. Will it be short and sweet like we saw in Wonder Woman, or will it take up more of a sizable chunk of the narrative? We’ll have to wait and see.
