The Rental has all the vibes of the traditional stalker home invasion movies.

A house in the middle of nowhere. Cameras installed in unusual places. The masked killer(s?) on the loose.

Home invasion thrillers are some of my favorite films, including The Strangers and You’re Next. By the looks of the trailer, it follows that pattern unless someone in the group is actually the villain.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Two couples looking to celebrate their seed money from a new business venture, embark on a weekend getaway to a seemingly perfect house they’ve booked online. But what begins as a festive weekend for the four close friends turns into something far more sinister as secrets they’ve kept from each other are exposed and paranoia grows that they may not be alone.

The Rental stars Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, The Guest), Alison Brie (GLOW, Community), Sheila Vand (A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Argo), and Jeremy Allen White (Shameless). It marks the directorial debut for Dave Franco. Franco co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Swanberg (V/H/S).

The movie is in select drive-ins, theaters and On Demand on July 24.

Home invasion thrillers are some of my favorite films, including The Strangers and You’re Next. By the looks of the trailer, it follows that same pattern unless someone in the group is actually the villain. The film has a lot of potential for being the first directing film for Franco. Perhaps he is following his brother’s footsteps of being behind the lens.
