The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power gets a Season 3, at least, as the showrunners sign a long term deal with Amazon. As reported by THR, showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne have signed a three-year deal. They have also started work on Rings of Power Season 3. Season 3 has not been ordered yet, officially. However, the pair are said to be starting early work on it which is a good sign Amazon will order it.
As per THR;
‘The show’s second season has wrapped filming and will be released later this year. While a third season hasn’t officially been ordered and a writers room has not yet opened, the showrunners have started to break the initial story outline.’
“We began this remarkable journey with JD and Patrick more than five and a half years ago and have never looked back,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios. “We continue to be amazed by the scope and scale of their vision and the enormous global success achieved by The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in its record-breaking first season. So we can’t wait for Prime Video customers to experience the epic adventure and high-stakes drama that JD and Patrick are continuing to build throughout season two and beyond. Naturally, the studio is thrilled to extend our overall deal with these brilliant creative minds as they continue to deliver on their passion for great storytelling.”

What this overall deal could include going forward we have no idea. However, this does point to Rings of Power maybe getting through to the end? That end has been said to be Season 5 of the show. Additionally, it would be a massive waste of money by Amazon if they did not carry on with The Rings of Power. The rights were a tad expensive if you recall.
Of course that may all depend on Season 2 of the show, expected to release later this year. Season 1 was an initial hit. However, when you compare completion rates and overall ratings, it does seem as though Amazon’s lower budget series The Wheel of Time outperformed it. Can it be turned around in Season 2? Maybe, but it won’t change the weird things that happened in Season 1 that I was not a fan of. Easy enough to list them all here. The Mithril lore changes and Sauron being trapped on a sinking boat when he’s able to exist in spirit form. The Three being made before the rest of the Rings. The Stranger implied to be Gandalf, oh and the silly Mordor key thing.
We shall see!
What do you think of this news as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power gets a Season 3, probably, as the showrunners sign a long term deal with Amazon.
