The Russos Are Keen To Direct A Star Wars Movie – Eventually

Since Avengers: Endgame fans have wondered whether the Russo Brothers could be tempted to move franchises. Specifically we want to know if the Russos are keen to direct a Star Wars movie? I’ve always assumed that this would happen eventually. The Russos are big fans of Star Wars, or at least the original movies. They have also helmed the biggest movie of all time and four of the most celebrated Marvel movies. Then add in the fact that Marvel boss Kevin Feige wants to produce a Star Wars movie at some point and there is no wondering where all this speculation comes from?

To be fair, the Russos have always played their cards close to their chest. However, a new report from CBM has Joe Russo admit he would be excited to play with that Star Wars Universe, eventually. The Russos spoke with the outlet about their new weekly series, Pizza Film School. The interviewer then asked if the pair would be keen to make a Star Wars movie at some point. Joe Russo replied,

“It’s an amazing world. Certainly, at some point, it would be exciting to play in that sandbox, but I think there’s a lot of stories being told in right now, and there’s a lot of great filmmakers working in it at the moment.”

You can read this a multitude of ways and the Russos are practiced diplomats by now. The way I read this quote is, ‘Yes, we would love to make a Star Wars movie, however now is not the right time.’ This sentiment makes total sense because the Russos probably know more about what is happening with Star Wars than any of us do. Taiki Waititi’s Star Wars movie is the only one officially announced.

However, LRM’s own source at Lucasfilm has given us a bit more information. For a start we were told that Waititi’s movie is pencilled in for 2024. After that we have been told the plan will be to allow Rian Johnson to film his trilogy of movies. This is the only movie plans our source is aware of, or willing to share. We have no idea where Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie could be squeezed in. It is possible that Feige won’t go anywhere near Star Wars until after Johnson’s trilogy. If that’s the case, I still have a feeling that the Russos will be who he has in mind for directing, along with their writing partners Markus and McFeely. We could therefore be looking at a decade into the future, and there is no way Joe Russo is going to reveal any talks they’ve had this far in advance.

I’m excited for Waititi’s movie, and I am even intrigued to see what Johnson can pull off. I did NOT like The Last Jedi, but I don’t think Johnson is a director you bring in to do one middle part movie and move on. If Johnson has an entire trilogy to work with, I think he might surprise some fans like me who didn’t care for those sequel trilogy movies. However, the prospect of the Russos coming in with Feige after Johnson is what excites me most.
