2019 was the year Warner Bros. saw another financial success with its origin story of one of DC’s most infamous creations. On a budget of just under $60 million–which in the world of superheroes and comic book movies is seen as a low budget film–Joker raked in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Additionally, the film achieved this feat without ever releasing in China, a massive market second only to North America. Fueled by a frighteningly eerie and perfect performance by Joaquin Phoenix, Joker not only added to the current successes from the DC Universe (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam!), but also hinted at the potential of Warner Bros. telling darker (and cheaper) stories that attract mass audiences.
