The Season Premiere For Season 2 Of Titans Was Supposed To Be The Finale Of Season 1

WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE SEASON FINALE OF DC UNIVERSE’S TITANS

Last Friday, DC Universe’s Titans wrapped up its first season with an unexpected eleventh episode titled “Dick Grayson.” This episode had a lot of hype going into it as in the trailer it had been shown us that Grayson, played by Brenton Thwaites, would have to go back to Gotham City because Batman had gone dark after the death of Commissioner Gordon and was looking to kill the Joker. But it had seemed Grayson arrived too late as  Batman’s rage had consumed him as he attempted to kill the Joker, who was found face down on a car windshield as we saw in the trailer.

But with him still alive Grayson tried and save his former mentor, only to witness him killing the Joker in the hospital. This led to Grayson revealing the identity of Batman, followed by a Grayson-led Bathunt at Wayne Manor. After a battle, Grayson made the decision to end the Dark Knight’s life with the stomp of his foot. A decision that brought him back to Angela’s, played by Rachel Nichols, farmhouse where we all see his eyes go dark like Rachel’s when she broke down, all to the delight of Trigon.

Not really the way I envisioned the ending of the first season, especially with the hopes of seeing Thwaites wearing a Nightwing costume. Also we still don’t necessarily have a Titans “team” yet at the end of the season. Also why would the first season end with eleven episodes instead of the planned twelve?

TVLine had the opportunity to talk with Titans‘ showrunner Greg Walker and they talked about some of these decisions for the ending of Season one. The question about the ending of the first season came up when he was asked about the Hank and Dawn episode which ended with Dawn saying “we have to find Jason Todd”, only for us not to see them in the finale. Was the finale for season one changed to the premiere of season two?

Speaking on that Walker said, “A version of that, yes. We’re cannibalizing some of the stuff from Episode 12 [for the premiere]. We thought it was such a good cliffhanger at the end of 11, and we wanted to go for an even bigger, better Season 2 opener. We had a big idea, and our friends at DC bought it.”

The season premiere of season two will now not only wrap up the first season, but it will be the introduction of next season’s villain. “Yeah. It’s really fun to be able to you know where we’re going to go with it. We’re going to also use [the Season 2 premiere] to launch a new villain, and because Trigon’s role in canon is so huge, we felt like we really needed to give him a really big episode, the kind you can launch a season with,” said Walker

We knew going into this series that it was going to be “a slow burn” as they described it back at San Diego Comic-Con, but for as much patience as viewers have given this series especially as the streaming services’ first, I would have thought that there would have been a bigger payoff at the end. Something like, the formation of the Titans, Gar transforming into another animal other than a Tiger or just even Nightwing.
