The Suicide Squad Had A Darker Ending And I’m Glad It Was Changed [SPOILERS]

Bloodsport Project In Development Debunked By James Gunn

The Suicide Squad had a darker ending in James Gunn’s early version. Since we are going to be discussing the ending of The Suicide Squad it goes without saying there’s a SPOILER Warning here. Then, you probably know that if you clicked on this title with the express purpose of finding out what that darker ending was. In other words, you had enough warning to turn away if you have not seen The Suicide Squad yet.

In the end of the The Suicide Squad, out of the main team, or team B if you like, there were only two deaths. At first we thought Peacemaker was dead after killing Rick Flagg, though the post-credit scene showed is he is still alive despite serious injury. However Polka dot man did indeed perish, and that left him and Flagg as the only true deaths from that team. However, speaking previous Gunn had hinted the ending was at one point a little darker and in his latest conversation with Variety, Gunn details what that ending was.

Gunn was asked if either Harley or Bloodsport were killed in any versions of the story.

“No, that never happened. But there was a change. The original ending that I pitched, one main character died and one main character did not die. And the main character who died was was Ratcatcher 2. She was so sweet, I just felt like it was just too dark. Not that we don’t love Polka-Dot Man. We do. I just couldn’t [kill Ratcatcher 2]. So I relented.”

I’m really glad Gunn changed his mind, because for me Ratcatcher 2 was the heart of the movie. If the movie had ended with her death I think it would have been too much of a downer. Not to mention that the character development that both Bloodsport and King shark go through would be all for nothing if their ‘friend’ had died. That would have been especially rough to see after Bloodsport had already saved her life by ‘killing’ Peacemaker.

Sure, I guess it could have been like a sacrifice ending. However I feel the idea of Ratcatcher 2, King shark, and Bloodsport being friends and developing further. Harley feels like too much of a loner to stick with the other three, but who knows?

The Suicide Squad had a darker ending, do you like it? Or like me do you prefer the version we ended up with on screen? sound off below as always.
