The Suicide Squad: Joel Kinnaman Describes James Gunn’s Film As An R-Rated Comedy

Gunn answers questions about The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad an R-rated comedy?

If nothing else, the DC films really do take risks. Over the past few movies, we’ve really seen them come into their own. Rather than try and take the Marvel Studios approach of making fully mainstream four-tentpole movies, they have instead had each character dictate their film. Birds of Prey, for example, was a hard-R action-comedy. Joker was a hard-R psychological drama. We can only imagine they’ll continue doing so in the near future.

And, from everything we can see, that’s exactly what they’re doing. The Batman looks like a straight dark mystery and The Suicide Squad looks like an old-school war movie with a James Gunn slant. But will The Suicide Squad be given the same freedom as Birds of Prey or Joker? Well, if there were any doubts about it going full James Gunn, we’re here to put it to rest.

“Every page of that script was funny, and every page made me laugh,” star Joel Kinnamon told THR about Gunn’s The Suicide Squad script. “[Writer/director] James [Gunn] just has this command of that genre, but also over every aspect of comedy and even the marketing. He just understands the world so well, and since he wrote it, he really reinvents not just the concepts, but also the characters. For me, it was like I did my first comedy, but it’s like heavily R-rated. It was a real learning experience for me too because I’d never done a comedy in that way before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me this sh—. And yeah, we had so much fun doing it.”

There’s no doubt that Gunn has a true love of comics. We saw him command that passion with Guardians of the Galaxy and based on the sheer number of members in Task Force X this time around, it’s clear he has deep cut knowledge of DC and Suicide Squad characters. The fact that he’s able to turn this into a full-on violent story in the true tradition of the I.P. is great to hear.

I’m also interested to see what Kinnaman’s Rick Flag brings to the more comedic aspects. He was very much a straight man in the first Suicide Squad, so will we see the force’s babysitter finally crack a joke? Only time will tell. All I know is I’m happy to see The Suicide Squad go the R-rated comedy route.

The Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
