The Suicide Squad Producer On Why No Will Smith

Will Smith The Suicide Squad

We are only a month away from The Suicide Squad and there is a lot of hype for this movie.  It is still a mystery of who is going to survive with director James Gunn doing an amazing job of not letting anyone in on the secret.  He went to great lengths of not spoiling the ending that actors got scripts up to the end of their character deaths. With some actors from the first Suicide Squad movie like fan-favorite Margot Robbie, it had some fans confused initially about whether this was a sequel or reboot.

James Gunn has clarified that this movie is neither a sequel nor a reboot but just his interpretation of The Suicide Squad. One of the biggest question marks when the movie was announced if Will Smith would be returning as Deadshot.  Although the first film was a financial flop, fans of the movie really liked Will Smith’s portrayal as Deadshot. When the full cast was announced and Will Smith’s name was missing this left so fans disappointed.  According to Producer Peter Safran, there was a discussion to bring Smith back as Deadshot. reports after a recent set visit the producer told the press that it was more of a scheduling issue to not have Will Smith back.

“We discussed it,” Safran admitted of Smith’s potential return in The Suicide Squad. “But I think the Will [Smith] of it all was really more of a schedule thing than anything else. We knew we had to start shooting in September because, frankly, we knew probably earlier than other people did that James was going to come back and do Guardians. So it was really important that we started shooting when we started shooting and Will wasn’t available, and that kind of made it easier all around. What are you going to do? He’s not available. So it’s also nice to, frankly, help separate it from the first movie, I think, in a greater fashion.”

To be frankly honest, I am glad it didn’t work out.  Don’t get me wrong I thought Will Smith was great as Deadshot but if he was brought back for this movie I don’t think it would’ve worked. I cannot wait to see what James Gunn has in store for us.

The Suicide Squad comes out in theaters and HBO Max on August 6th.
